ABOUT THE LAWRENCEVILLE GOURMET SPAGHETTI DINNER

The Lawrenceville Gourmet Spaghetti Dinner, founded by the Boys of Lawrenceville in 2004, marks its return on Friday, March 2, 2012 at the Teamster’s Temple in Lawrenceville. This unique event will benefit the Bernard Dog Run community initiative, aimed at building an off-leash dog park for the residents of Lawrenceville, as well as the nonprofit animal resource center, Animal Friends.

The Bernard Dog Run community initiative started in 2008 with the sole mission of establishing a community-based, off-leash dog park that is well-maintained, safe and enjoyable for the dogs and dog owners of Pittsburgh’s Lawrenceville neighborhood. The initiative, supported by Lawrenceville United, Councilman Patrick Dowd and the City of Pittsburgh, is continuing its momentum as all clearances and approvals have been secured; now, raising funds to cover construction and maintenance costs remains as the final step in launching this much-needed community asset.

The community initiative was named in honor of the late Jay Bernard, a Lawrenceville resident, businessman and abandoned dog advocate. Mr. Bernard pioneered neighborhood involvement in Lawrenceville, serving as a catalyst for community activities including Art All Night, the Joy of Cookies Tour and the Lawrenceville House Tour. He founded The Boys of Lawrenceville, a benevolent organization of gay men in Lawrenceville, and created its Gourmet Spaghetti Dinner fund-raiser to benefit local families and organizations.

The dinner was last held on October 5, 2007, just short of five months after Mr. Bernard passed from his battle with stomach cancer.

On Friday, March 2, 2012, the Lawrenceville Gourmet Spaghetti Dinner returns after a more than four-year hiatus to serve as the major annual fund-raiser for the Bernard Dog Run community initiative. The event will be held at the Teamster’s Temple at 4701 Butler Street from 4:30 p.m. to 9:30 p.m., and the evening will include entertainment, silent auctions and traditional Italian music for more than 750 guests.

Visitors will also learn more about the Friendship community and get a chance to meet and mingle with Friendship neighbors!  Kids will enjoy the craft tables, street space for bikes and skates as well as a special kids raffle.

Celebrate Life, Celebrate Art raises money for Persad Center’s Free Care Fund.

Persad Center remains committed to providing care regardless of an individual’s ability to pay. Last year, the agency provided nearly $400,000 in free and subsidized services for people who could not otherwise afford care.

With the help of Chad Warren at Cytech Hosintg, Elise Gatti (heading up Dog Park effort), and Zachary Schweitzer for his incredible Dog Park Logo, we have been able to get LawrencvilleDogPark.org off the ground!  There is much more work to do, but check it out and give feedback!  What would you want to see on the site?

NO JOKE!  Here’s the skinny on the Lawrenceville Dog Park effort:

We are currently in the process of acquiring the support of our local elected officials and community development organizations.  We will be presenting our proposal to them in early April.  With their support, we will then present our proposal to the City of Pittsburgh and the Urban Redevelopment Authority in mid-April.  We plan to have a dedicated site by May.

Once we have a site, we will hold a public meeting, where we will share information about the park, explain the code of conduct, address any concerns, and recruit volunteers and donations.  We will also be pushing to raise funds to help defray the costs and pay for special amenities.

In the meantime, please help us by filling out our extended survey.  We will use the results of this survey to demonstrate community support for the project and to help us design the actual park.
